Oromia @ Federation Square is one of the biggest Oromo Community festivals held every year. Since the beginning, Oromo people from across Australia congregated at Federation Square to celebrate and commemorate the beauty of Oromo culture. The Oromo are descendants of the Eastern-Kushitie group of people, Indigenous Africans from the country Oromia in Northeast Africa. With a population of over 40 million, the Oromo community is one of the largest Indigenous groups in East Africa. Organised by the Australian Oromo Community Association in Victoria in conjunction with Melbourne Oromo Youth Association, Oromia @ Federation Square was a jam-packed cultural extravaganza that delighted the energetic crowd.
Oromia @Federation Square is a day the Oromos in Melbourne will share their rich culture with everyone in Australia.  We aim to bring Oromo people together, irrespective of age, gender and belief, to help promote self-empowerment. We also seek to educate the public on the lifestyle, culture and ethics of members of the Australian Oromo community. Also, we will be sharing experiences, positively exploring our differences and understanding the many other cultures that make up our societies. Furthermore, it’s a time to celebrate and commemorate the beauty of Australian Oromo culture and to promote both multiculturalism and diversity across Australia.
On Sunday 22 December 2013 from 2:30pm, there will be a cultural exhibition and Oromo food on offer. The performances will begin with release doves in a ceremony to celebrate freedom and independence. Traditional dance medleys, wedding re-enactments, hip hop performances, a live band, and children’s entertainment all provides the crowd with a taste of Oromo culture and helped celebrate 25 years since the establishment of the Australian Oromo Community.
The celebration of Oromia at Federation Square marks the beginning of yet another exciting year of events that aim to bring the case of the Oromo cause. All the best to the Australian Oromos who will continue making contributions to the global Oromo cause in 2013 and beyond.

Fylkesmannen i XXXXXXX

Israel hopes new detention facility will eventually hold up to 9,000 African asylum seekers [Reuters]
Israel has begun moving African asylum seekers into a new detention facility in the country's southern desert, in a move that has been harshly criticised by human rights groups.
The Israeli prison service said 480 African asylum seekers, who had been held in Shaharonim detention centre, were transferred to the new facility on Thursday, and about 1,000 asylum seekers would be held there by the end of the month.
An amendment to Israel's "Anti-Infiltration Law" was passed by parliament, the Knesset, on Tuesday, and shortened the mandatory prison terms for African asylum seekers who have illegally entered Israel from three years to one year.
The Israeli government said the law "creates a suitable balance between the right of the State of Israel to defend its borders and prevent infiltration, and its obligation to act in a humanitarian manner toward anyone within its borders and protect the human rights due to every person".
But the asylum seekers will now be held in the new detention centre, known as Sadot, indefinitely without charge or trial until they can be sent back to their home countries.
The detention of African asylum seekers, a group of Israeli human rights groups said in a statement on Tuesday, "is not only draconian, undemocratic, and a fatal blow to human rights, it will also do nothing to help the already marginalized residents of South Tel Aviv", an area where many asylum seekers live.
In the new facility, asylum seekers will be locked down at night, and forced to check-in with the Israeli authorities three times per day. They will also be barred from working outside the centre.
Human rights groups have called the new facility a de facto prison, a charge that Israel denies.
Speaking to Al Jazeera in November, before the law was officially approved, Marc Grey, spokesperson for the Association for Civil Rights in Israel (ACRI) said: "We don’t see this as an improvement... The law itself, whether it’s three years or one year [of detention]… it’s still just absolutely a massive violation of [asylum seekers'] rights."
9,000-person capacity
There are an estimated 54,000 African asylum seekers in Israel, with most coming from Sudan and Eritrea.
The Israeli government says African migrants are a burden on the state, and threaten its Jewish character. The country's policies, state officials have said, aim to deter the arrival of refugees at Israel's borders, and deport the ones that already live in the country.
According to a report in Israeli daily Ha'aretz, the new detention facility can currently hold up to 1,000 people, but it is expected to expand to accommodate 3,300 within the next two months.
"We hope it will eventually hold 6,000 or even 9,000 people," Yitzhak Aharonovitch, Israel's Public Security Minister, said.
The state said it would also provide African migrants held in the new centre with a monthly stipend, health services and educational training.
But asylum seekers are not convinced.
"There is no-one that can claim that he or she is safe in Israel... Everybody is afraid here. We are not secure," Haile Mengistaab, the head of the Eritrean Community Committee in Israel, told Al Jazeera in November.

Oromo Studies Association’s Press Release on the Death of Nelson Mandela

The Oromo Studies Association (OSA) is profoundly saddened by the death of Nelson Mandela. Mandela was a father, a husband, a statesman, a global hero, an anti-apartheid symbol, an advocate of human rights, and a fearless fighter of discrimination. He fought for the equal right of the black people in Apartheid South Africa, and paid a heavy price for the freedom of his people. He was condemned to a 27-year imprisonment. Despite the prison ordeals, he defended his dignity, civility, discipline, principle, and emerged a better human being. Eventually, he led a pariah state to a new chapter of peace with itself and the world. A passionate and forgiving man, he built a common home for blacks and white races – making animosity between the once sworn enemies a matter of history. Today, the rainbow nation is a model for a racial equality and tolerance. Added to his popularity and grace was his decision to limit his presidency to one term in the continent often incumbents die in the office or removed by coup.

Mandela was a prisoner of conscience, but he was a free man at last. Today, there are tens of thousands of Oromo prisoners of conscience in Ethiopian prisons. Mandela was once considered a terrorist. Today, the Ethiopian government often labels one who advocates for the rights of the Oromo people as a terrorist. It is against this background that Mandela’s universal message of justice has a strong resonance in the Oromo nation, a nation trying to overcome a century of discrimination, oppression, marginalization, exploitation, and occupation.
The Oromo nation had a historical connection to a man who changed the world through his words and actions. He inspired General Taddasa  Birru, a man who ignited the struggle of the Oromo people for freedom and equality. The Oromo nation takes pride in teaching a military science and training Mandela needed to spark the struggle of the people of South Africa. Mandela cut his teeth under General Taddasa Birru and Capt. Fekadu Wakane. The Oromo nation also foiled an assassination attempt against the life of Nelson Mandela. Captain Dinka Guta is still a living witness for that. We are also happy that Dr. Neville Alexander, a son of an Oromo slave, fought for the independence of the people of South Africa, and imprisoned with Mandela at the same prison.
Mandela has left the world for good; yet he has changed the world for good.  Today, the world is a better place for humanity because of a meaningful life he lived and a remarkable legacy he left behind.  We are grieving his death, but humanity is better off because of his universal message of love, peace, harmony, understanding, human rights, and democracy. Mandela’s struggle against discrimination and oppression will inspire the struggle of the Oromo people and other oppressed peoples around the world.  Our prayers and thoughts are with his family and the people of South Africa during this difficult time.

The Legacy of violence: State terrorism of TPLF -led Ethiopian government using Anti-Terror Law on political descents must End

Oromo Liberation Front
olf_logoDecember 2, 2013 (Oromo Liberation Front)The research and information unit of the Oromo Liberation Front (OLF) has conducted a study on the allegiance that accounted for some political prisoners to be sentenced or otherwise been unjustly detained. The herewith attached partial list of political prisoners has been collected from prisons of Kaliti, Torhailoch (Military Police Prison), Maikelawi and Kilinto. Almost all prisoners are charged for act of terror, violation of territorial integrity, attempts to overthrow the constitutional order by violent means and being suspected member of OLF or any other organizations. These political prisoners are ranging in age from young High school and University students to elderly civic society leaders. Professionally they are also diverse from farmer, business man, government employee; political leaders, journalists and etc. The overwhelming portions are Oromos and some are also from different nation and nationalities of Ethiopia.
Most of these political prisoners already gave prison service for several years; many of them are tortured and subjected to irreversible mental damages, and some of them were shot to death in the course of time.
Since the fall of Transitional Government in 1992, Ethiopian authorities continued to severely restrict basic rights of freedom of expression, association, and assembly. Violation of human rights is a daily record of the regime. Instead of solving the root cause of political conflict, it rather declared war on the Oromo people and its vanguard Organisation, the OLF. Consequently, many thousands of Oromos and other nationals were arbitrarily arrested and detained and remain at risk of torture, ill-treatment and extrajudicial killings. Many of them were executed during peaceful demonstrations due to excessive use of force by police or security agents.
The TPLF regime promulgated and adopted the restrictive Anti-Terrorism Proclamation in 2009. This regime, which from its very initial, was known for its massive human rights violations is currently using this law to justify all atrocities it conducted. In this attempt to hood wink opinions of the international community, the EPRDF regime is still trying to make others believe that the current problem of the empire is act of terror but not deep rooted political conflict of domination.
The OLF vehemently opposes any forms of terrorism and reject the use of terrorism neither as a form of struggle nor also for suppression of dissidents by states. Thus, we denounce the Ethiopian state terrorism that is used to crush any form of struggle and decent.
OLF is cognizant of, and appreciate the concern of various human rights advocating organizations and some democratic governments that expressed their concerns about Anti-Terrorism, Press and Civic society laws of Ethiopia on various international forums.
In a country like Ethiopia where the government structure is monopolized by a single ethnic group, legalizing the abuse of the universal human rights is a way that leads for the establishment of a totalitarian system which is more sustaining than a simple personal dictatorship. Therefore, OLF alarms that the dangerous political development sustaining over Ethiopia demands more than just a concern but towards a proactive action of the international communities and UN member states. We denounce legalized form of state terrorism and call up on the international community to exert diplomatic pressure on Ethiopian government to release all political prisoners unconditionally and repeal these brutal and repressive laws.
