July 24, 2013 | Washington, DC
To All Oromo nationals and friends of the Oromo in the Diaspora,protest_in_washThe Oromo Youth Self-Help Association (OYSA), in collaboration with other sisterly associations:  the Oromo Community Organization (OCO) of Washington D.C. area, and the Oromo Studies Association (OSA), has organized a peaceful protest to be held in Washington, D.C., in front of the White House and the US State Department, on Friday, August 02, 2013 to request the US administration put pressure on:
  • the Ethiopian regime to stop the mass killings & displacements of Oromos in Mayu Muluqqee, Qumbii, & Cilaqsan in East Hararge, Manasibu in West Wollega and Moyale in Boranaa of Oromia,
  • the Ethiopian regime to release Bekele Gerba, Olbana Lelisa and thousands of Oromo political prisoners,
  • the UNHCR, Egyptian, Yemen and Djibouti governments to protect Oromo refugees in Egypt, Yemen and Djibouti as well as respect the UN convention on political immigrants.
All Oromos and friends of the Oromos living in metropolitan areas of Washington D.C. (Maryland, Virginia), Pennsylvania, NY, Texas, Minneapolis, Seattle, Atlanta, etc are kindly asked to stand with us and advocate for our people who have been unjustly killed, displaced, incarcerated and silenced. This is also to protest against the inhumane treatment of Oromo immigrants in Egypt, Yemen and Djibouti. Together we can make a difference by speaking up for our people. We should say ‘Stop’ to the dictatorial regime in Ethiopia, and uplift the voice of our people to the world forum. It is evident that our people are suffering because of their identity, outlook and beliefs. Therefore, this is the time when you can take a practical action by standing with them and telling about their pains, which we all carry with us. Every shout and every protest will eventually make a difference!
Let’s act and march together, let’s stand side by side in large numbers and show to the world that we are serious about our people’s rights. Let’s show again and again to the US policy makers that we are indeed a strong force to reckon with and shall not be ignored.
On our previous protest of January 25, 2013 we proved that the Oromo youth is the real engine of Oromo power as we stood together with our seniors in extreme weather carrying placards, shouting slogans, and singing “Tokkummaa Tokkummaa”. Come and join us again! Don’t let any business or reason stop you! As we have done before, let’s make every effort to be there for our brethren on this day. This is a tiny sacrifice that we can pay for our nation Oromia!
Please also share this announcement to all in your domains; through social media such as facebook, twitter, email, via phone, paltalk, blogs, front-pages of websites, through radio/TV and personally in social gatherings.

=============================================================

Dear OSA members and friends,

The Oromo youth in general and the Oromo Youth Self-help Association (OYSA) in particular, were the key in our successful peaceful demonstration of January 25, 2013 in front of the US State Department in Washington DC. An estimated 60% of those on the rally were the youth. They made us proud.
Now, the Oromo youth have prepared another peaceful rally under their leadership and in collaboration with OSA and OCO, planned for August 2, 2013. This time the plan is to meet at the White House and march to the US State Department. The flyer for the event is coming up soon. I strongly urge OSA members for them to do their very best to participate on this rally. For those who come for OSA annual conference, I ask you to do your best to arrive in DC early on August 2 for you to be able to particpate on the rally. I understand that many of you may have purchsed air ticket already, but I am just asking you to do your very best to rearrange it.
Violence against the Oromo, which is a theme of one panel on our annual conference, is intensified in the Ethiopian empire as we speak. Just today, VOA Afan Oromo service (listenhere) reported that 21 Oromos, most of them Oromo university students, have been convicted of “carrying out the terrorist mission of OLF and endangering the unity of the country” after being in jail for over three years. [By the way OSA's annual conference preparation is also reported today by Namo Dandi in "dirree dimokrasii", you may listen to that as well].
If you may recall, one of the slogans we were chanting on our January 25 rally says “Release Student Dachasa Wirtu” and we were carrying his picture. Sadly, it is reported on today’s  VOA program that Dachasa Wirtu is one of those convicted of “serious crime” and is expected to receive a long prison term or possibly death. It is only today that his arrest has been reported on a major international media in the first place.
So, we can not keep silent. We have to speak for our brothers and sisters whose voices have been silenced. They have no body but us. Let’s stand with our boys and girls, our youth, and show that we are not a weak nation. Here is where we show our strength to our enemies and allies alike. It will be a shame for us to stay at home when our children are taking the lead to fight injustice which we passed on to them. In January, some people stayed home because of the bad weather which was understandably terribly cold that day in Washington DC. Now, we will not have any excuse.
Come, and join your children on August 2 at the White House! Fight tyranny! Don’t be silent, speak out!
United we prevail! Let’s do what we can do together. We can do this one!
Mosisa Aga, Ph.D.

The Ethiopian Empire State and the Oromo National Struggle for Liberation

The Ethiopian Empire state is on the verge of collapse like other empires in history. The empire rulers can no more hide the Oromo struggle for liberation under the guise of religion and territorial integrity. The Oromo question is the Elephant in the room for the current Ethiopian rulers and its foreign backers, and any attempt to delay the inevitable would be not a wise thing to do before the people of the south and the Oromo’s take things in their own hand to stop the killings in their own backyards. Therefore, the immediate and urgent task for the Oromos and the southern nations is to intensify their struggle and realize the total victory that is within reach for the total emancipation of their people.
One would always ask how successive Abyssinians regimes managed to rule over the Southern nations, including the Oromo’s (currently known as the subjects or colonies), who constitute over half of the population of the Ethiopian Empire for so long?
The answer to this intriguing argument could be a) because the Abyssinians were and still are more intelligent and superior races compared to their subjects in the South; b)because the Abyssinians were always supported and armed by foreign governments, who view the geo-political importance and proximity of the Ethiopian Empire to the volatile region of the Arabian Peninsula and the Suez Canal, where two-third of the entire world oil out-put is transported; C) successive Abyssinians regimes managed to hold on to their Southern Colonies( People of the South and the Oromo’s) due to the fact that the colonies themselves failed to wage coordinated and sustained struggle.
The last but not least argument many people agree on why successive Abyssinian regimes managed to rule over their Southern subjects is that the all past and current regimes managed to sell or present their Empire as a Christian island that is surrounded by hostile Muslim dominated region.
It is true that all of the above arguments hold strong truth in them by which successive Abyssinian regimes managed to deflect a century old questions of freedom by southern peoples., but the degree to which these tactics were exploited depends on the then or current world political order.
For example, the first colonial ruler of the Ethiopian Empire, Menelik II successfully managed to invade and conquer the South by exploiting the then disagreement among the European colonial powers, namely Italy, Britain, and France, who were jostling to expand their empire. Emperor Menelik, not only exploited the then disagreement among the three European colonial powers, but managed to convince the three of them that if they (the three European powers) arm him with modern weapons, he, on his part was willing to provide the un-fêted access to the untapped human and natural resources of the his new colonies to all of the three European powers. With the help of these European powers, and the subsequent deal he made to give access to the rich ivory, gold and coffee of the new colonies, emperor Menelik II got away with unprecedented genocide he and his foot soldiers committed on the Oromo’s and other people of the South. According to some official and some unofficial documents, Menelik II has reduced the population size of the Oromo from ten million to five million. This indicates genocide has happened on unprecedented scale by Menelik II and his foot soldiers against the Oromo’s.
After the death of emperor Menilik II, the next king of this new Empire was Haile Selassie II, who ruled the empire for nearly half a Century. During his rein, Haile Seallsie II employed both his predecessor tactics of presenting his empire as a Christian Island surrounded by unfriendly and hostile region. Just like Menelik II, King Haile Sealssie effectively used both the direct and in-direct rules (direct rule being the French colonial policy in Africa, & indirect rule – the British colonial rule) to rule his empire with iron and fist for such a long time. By direct rule, King Haile Selassie introduced and imposed Orthodox Christianity as the official religion of the empire against the traditional religion of the colonies. The Amahara culture and Amharic language were made the official culture and languages of the empire by decree.
The Derg (the military Junta), which ruled the empire from the 1970s to late 1980s ruled and kept the empire intact using the guise of popular revolution movement of the time and by partially responding to the urgent demand of the popular demand named “Land to the tiller” leap service recognition of the existence of other nations and nationalities in the empire state. However, when it came to responding to the century old demands of freedom by these nations and nationalities, the Derg Junta employed the Socialist Revolution slogans and under the guise of “protecting the boundaries and territorial integrity of the empire” to quash the dream of the Oromo’s and the Southern people to set themselves free, and counted as citizens rather than subjects.
The current TPLF regime of the late Meles Zenawi has been the most brutal, harsh and in-humane towards the Oromo’s and the Southern peoples when comparing with Menelik II, Haile Selassie and the Military Junta rules of the empire. Why is TPLF rules of the empire and the un-precented scale of human rights abuses different from the past three regimes of the empire rulers?
Unlike the past three regimes, who rose from the Amahric speaking Abyssinians, the TPLF originates from a much less population of the Tigre region, which comprises only about five percent of the current Ethiopian empire. Secondly, the TPLF rose from a century old power struggle with its close kin the Amahars, who defeated the Tigre king Yohannes IV. In other words, the TPLF came to power not only to rule over the empire but also to avenge their century old wounds against their kin, the Amaharas.
Thirdly, TPLF’s cleverly learnt the shortcomings of the Amaharas rulers over the colonies and for the first time in the history of the empire forcefully accepted the existence of independent nations like the Oromo’s, and allowed some form of self-rule and the use of their languages in office and schools.
However, when it comes to responding to democratic and justice demands of the Oromo for total liberation, TPLF created satellite organizations that speak the languages of the indigenous population and killed harassed, displaced and jailed thousands of innocent Oromo’s. According to official reports by Amnesty International, Oromia Support Group and other local human rights bodies, currently there are close to 45,000 innocent Oromo’s in different TPLF incarceration cells.
The late TPLF ruler, Meles Zenawi loudly and clearly declared on many occasions that, TPLF conquered the empire’s power by the use of guns and violence; therefore, it can only be forced out of power by those who can use the same tactics. This reminded me of that famous saying “Power never gives up by will” but only by force.
While committing un-precented human rights abuses in glaring day lights against the Oromo’s, TPLF managed to harvest billions of dollars from its Western backers. Someone might ask how they managed to get away with these crimes in the 21st Century. The simple answer would be, TPLF successfully presented and sold itself as the best, less brutal and democratic of all the regimes the empire has seen. By portraying itself to its Western backers as less evil than all the past Ethiopian regimes, Current minority TPLF regime quickly jumped on the band wagon of fighting Islamic extremism in the region, and managed to receive billions of dollars and military aid to crash its opponents. Then came the September eleven attack on the United States by Al-Qaida. When the then president George W Bush declared “ you are either with us or”, the TPLF leaders and its backers within the USA governments and other European cities bought the TPLF ploy that Ethiopia is surrounded by evil Islamic nations, who wanted to establish an Islamic state in the entire East Africa and the Middle East. Please note, as I indicated above, all successive rulers of the empire rulers used the “Christian Island” surrounded by hostile Muslim nations card to gain backing and support from varied USA presidents and governments plus many European states.
All Abyssinians regimes invaded, conquered and maintained their empire until now, and managed to hide their atrocities against the Oromo’s and the Southern nations by portraying themselves as the defenders of a Christian nation against Islamic states in the region.
Of all the Abyssinian regimes, the current minority regime of the TPLF not only committed un precented human rights atrocities against the Oromo’s and other nations in the South, its determinations to displace millions of Oromo’s from their ancestral land to the lowest bidder ( not the highest bidder), destroy their forests by clearing in the name of development, and expose current and future generations of Oromos and the southern nations to environmental genocide.
In my conclusion of this article, let me make very clear to all of my southern friends and the Oromo nation that in the history of human kind, empires were built and also destroyed by people on which the empires were built. As the famous quotes goes “ power never gives up by will”, Oromo’s and other Southern nations have to intensify their struggle in all forms until the Ethiopian empire is dismantled like any other empires that were built and dismantled by the indigenous populations of Africa, Asia and Latin America.
The challenge for the Oromo’s and the people of the South is that the old guards of the empire are so starved and furious by losing the empire they built to their junior partners ( the Tigirians). These old guards of the empire barking loudly inside and outside of the country against the symbolic self-rule that is currently in-place, in the name of one person one vote and as the guarantors of democratic rights slogans to undo the gains that we have earned by much blood and sacrifice.
May Waqaa Bless our forefathers, fathers, mothers, brothers and sisters who paid the ultimate price for the dignity of the Oromo People and the southern nations.

Massive crackdown underway on opposition stronghold of South Wollo, Ethiopia

July 29, 2013
crackdown-in-ethiopia-300x226It was a pre-dawn assault by hundreds of heavily armed federal police members backed by pro-TPLF local militia on the opposition UDJP strong hold of South Wollo province.
According to Finotenetsanet newspaper reporters, yesterday’s dawn- to- dusk raid targeted the twin towns of Haiq and Worebabu; and more heavy handed attacks are set to continue in other nearby towns and villages of the historic province.
Worebabu area UDJP leader Ato Edris Saed told Finotenetsanet that the police tried to disguise their act by telling people that they are looking for weapons.
Arage Hussein, UDJP’s financial officer in the town of Haiq said the police and the feared local militia searched the homes of all 16 members of UDJP leadership, each search lasting for up to two hours and more.
“I pleaded with the five police men and the militias who came to my home at dawn that I am a man of peace and never owned a firearm but they proceeded with the search and left empty-handed.” Ato Arage Added.
Moreover, according to South Wollo zone UDJP chairman Ato Bisrat Abi, the ruling party is on a campaign trail in the area, on a burgeoning run to discredit the UDJP leadership and its members. TPLF cadres have already organized anti UDJP meetings and demonstrations as part of the well planned crack down on dissenting voices in the region.
“Since the recent mass anti TPLF rallies organized in Dessie and Gonder cities, UDJP has been on the rise. The ruling junta’s cadres now have an implacable enemy right under their noses with the potential of bringing down the conjugal dictatorship. Therefore, I see it as normal for the authoritarian and corruption-ridden regime to wage an all-out war on the UDJP.” A respected political analyst who requested anonymity told the Horn Times from Addis Ababa.
Asked if UDJP has any chance of surviving the onslaught with no international support, with western powers still generously endowing the ruling minority junta; turning a blind eye on its undemocratic practices, the elderly analyst said it is up to the people of Ethiopia to rally around the party and its young and energetic leadership.
“Look, we all thought UDJP was hanging on life support system after the loss of its patriotic leaders in Andualem Arage and Natinael Mekonnen. Am astonished by how the current young leaders filled the leadership vacuum and make the party grow from strength to strength. I hope they will keep the momentum, keep the pressure on the junta and get serious violations and abuses such as this one in south Wollo quickly to the media. We are in better times today than yesterday.”

The mass arrest of oromo individuals in Kilinto detention center

the mass arrest of oromo individuals in Kilinto detention center
DR merera gudina confirmed the arrest of those oromos on an interview with ESAT they are in  bad conditions some of them need medical treatment they are injured badly by prison investigators
Currently there is no rule of law in Ethiopia and there is no independent judiciary system that one can get fair justice or due process of law where one can prove one’s innocence. The TPLF government is the prosecutor, the witness, the judge and the jury. An accusation by TPLF cadres is tantamount to a sentence by a court. Besides, The TPLF government is doing its best to clear every single opposition more than ever by enacting suitable instrument (law) in the name of ‘anti-terrorism’ and the new controversial approval of licence to kill for NISS that already started to be exercised since june 2013. The government using this potent instrument is cracking down on political dissent, including peaceful political demonstrations and public criticisms of government policy that are deemed supportive of armed opposition activity. The currently working law permits long-term imprisonment and even the death penalty for "crimes" that bear no resemblance, under any credible definition, to terrorism. It also deprives defendants of the right to be presumed innocent, and of protections against use of evidence obtained through torture. Most importantly The Proclamation is working in the context of concerns over political repression, suppression of freedom of speech and independent civil society, the impunity conferred on security forces, Right now, Individuals are sent to long time and life imprisonment, and given death penalty without any evidence simply because they stood for their basic human right.

USCIRF Calls on Ethiopia to Release Religious Freedom Advocates on Trial

USCIFJuly 23, 2013, WASHINGTON D.C. (USCIRF) — On the one-year anniversary of the crackdown on Muslim protestors for peacefully advocating for their religious freedom rights, the U.S. Commission on International Religious Freedom (USCIRF) calls on the Ethiopian government to release 29 individuals who have been detained and put on trial.
In July 2012, the government arrested hundreds of Muslims peacefully demanding that it cease interfering in their religious affairs and allow their community to vote freely for representatives on the Ethiopian Islamic Affairs Supreme Council (EIASC).  While most were released, 29 were charged on October 29, 2012 under the government’s Anti-Terror Proclamation, accused of “intending to advance a political, religious or ideological cause” by force and the “planning, preparation, conspiracy, incitement and attempt of terrorist acts.”  It was the first time that Ethiopia’s terrorism law was used in connection with a religious freedom issue.
“We are deeply concerned that Ethiopia’s government is seeking to silence peaceful religious freedom proponents by detaining and trying them in secret under trumped-up terrorism charges.  They should be released now and their trials halted,” said USCIRF Chair Katrina Lantos Swett.  “When USCIRF was in Ethiopia in December 2012, we met with lawyers for the 29 who reported that their clients had been tortured and experienced other ill-treatment in detention.  Since then, the Commission has expressed concern about a February 2013 program, Jihadawi Harekat (Holy War Movement). This program, which the government aired on Ethiopia TV and portrayed the protesters and those arrested as terrorists, could prejudice the outcome of their trial.  The U.S. government must increase its advocacy to ensure that the defendants’ religious freedom and human and due process rights are respected.”
Starting in December 2011, Muslims in Addis Ababa and across Ethiopia held weekly peaceful demonstrations in mosques after Friday prayers to protest efforts by the government and the EIASC to impose al-Ahbash, a foreign interpretation of Islam, on their community.  While officials did not stop the protests for almost six months, as they grew in size, protestors reported that security forces began intimidating them and their families to discourage continued demonstrations.
The first arrests occurred on July 13, 2012, when police raided the Aweliya Mosque as individuals gathered to plan for both a charity event and protests to coincide with an upcoming African Union Summit in Addis Ababa.  Protestors reportedly were beaten and arrested, with some witnesses alleging police use of tear gas and live ammunition.  On July 19-20, the police continued to arrest Muslim community members, including journalists and the 17 members of the Arbitration Committee the protestors had elected to negotiate with the government.  On July 21, police broke up a sit-in protesting the arrests.  According to witnesses, protestors were subjected to beatings, tear gas and arrests.
Those charged include nine members of the Arbitration Committee, the editor-in-chief of the Ye’Muslimoch Guday Yusuf Getachew, and Habiba Mohammed, the wife of the (now former) Minister of Civil Service, Junedin Sado.

Pro-Ethiopian Unity and Oromo Nationalism

By Bakalcho Barii | July 23, 2013
Before I embark on who are behind the pro-unity forces in current Ethiopian empire political environment, let’s look at what the meaning of the word “Unity” means in its dictionary meaning. According to the Penguin English Dictionary “Unity” is defined as the state of being one or united in aims or interest. If we simply take the dictionary meaning of the term or phrase “Unity” in the current Ethiopian Empire political context, the difference between the Pro-Unity Ethiopian forces and the Oromo Nationalism is as wide as the distance between the planet earth and the outer space.
Pro-Ethiopian unity forces claim the current symbolic federalism in the Ethiopian Empire is brought by Wayyane junta to divide the once one and united Country for its own narrow political advantage. Therefore, according to these forces, post Wayyane government in that empire must be based on a unitary structure similar to the Emperor’s period. Many factions within the so called Pro-Unity Ethiopian forces are those who took part in the Ethiopian student movements of the 1960s, and made refugee by the Derg Junta during the red terror. The current rulers of the empire also belong to these groups with only one distinction between the former and the latter Pro-unity Ethiopian forces. The former ones, mainly Amahara speaking Abysinians , and the latter ones are Tigiringa speaking Abysinians.
While the Amahra speaking Abysinians still dream of the Ethiopia, where the supremacy and domination of the Amahara culture and language thrive and develop at the expense of other Nations and Nationalities, their Tigiringa speaking cousins believe half-heartedly in administering the empire under the guise of federalism but a federalism where the supremacy and domination of the Tigiringa speaking group dominates every aspects life of their subjects in the south, including the Oromos. For any wise man or woman who critically observe the current Wayyane Junta, they not only want to dominate every aspects of the population in the south for few years but they dream of remaining at the top for decades or centuries until their homeland Tigray fully develop at the expense of their Southern subjects, including the Oromos.
On the other hand, the old Amahra guard that used to dominate the empire, which I call the pro-Unity Ethiopian forces dream of claiming the throne, which was once their property under the mask of Ethiopian unity. According to this group, under the successive Abyssinian rulers everything was rosy not only for them but for their subjects too. They even claim further that the current political predicament of the Ethiopian Empire is the work of foreign forces which want to see this old Christian nation did not want to exist. Not once, they ready to acknowledge that Ethiopia was an Empire which was created by committing cultural, economic, social, psychological and physical genocide on the Oromos and other people of the south. These groups, if given the chance not only want to continue the Imperial Ethiopian structure, but take the atrocities against the Oromo and people of the south on unprecedented scale.
On the contrary, the Oromos and the people of the south demand or want to see where they can have a say in their future co-existence with their Abysinian neighbors , which might include living in federation , con-federation or opting to have their own independent nation state.
Jawar Mohammed ‘s I am Oromo First & the Reactions of the Pro-Unity Ethiopian forces
The recent reaction and verbal abuse aimed at a young Oromo nationalist Jawar Mohammed made me remember what President Barack Obama said last week on the not guilty verdict for George Zimmerman on the basis of “Stand your ground” shooting and killing of the teenage Tray van Martin in Florida.
In his remark on this sensitive issue, Barack Obama said “there is no single Black Afro-American men and women who were not followed when they go to shopping in department stores”. From the reaction and cyber abuses that targeted Jawar Mohammed merely because he said “ I am an Oromo First, Ethiopian was imposed on me” is exactly what generations of Oromos have experienced under the successive Abysinain rulers, and are experiencing until now. It is such abuses and denial of self-identity that led many heroic Oromos to form the Oromo Liberation Front to confront this evil deed of the Ethiopian Empire.
G7 political movement under Breahnu Nega and its play card on attempting to break Oromo Nationalism.
As many of you might be aware, Breahnu Nega, a self-proclaimed saviour of the Ethiopian Empire once said the following after he received a reprieve from his life sentence for trying to overthrow the Wayyane Junta under the then Kinijit party in the 2005 election. He, Breahnu Nega once freed from TPLF cell and fled to North America declared “the majority of political prisoners in Ethiopia are Oromos and all of them claim or dream of establishing an Independent Republic of Oromia” and that is why I decided to join the pro-Unity Ethiopian parties, mainly to abort the inevitable liberation of Oromia from the Ethiopian Empire state. To achieve these goals, Breahnu Nega laid down the following strategies:
  1. Approach and then infiltrate the Oromo Liberation Front using meetings, seminars under the guise of post-Ethiopia after Wayyane. He succeeded in this first plan and managed to get an invitation as a guest speaker on the either 2009/2010 (not sure with the exact year) Oromo Studies Association. Although, at the time of this invitation, many Oromo nationalists opposed, he used this platform in proclaiming his stand for Ethiopian Empire state that also includes Eritrea and his mantra of post-Wayyane government must be formed on the principles of “individual rights and one vote” no group(s) rights.
  2. After successfully using the OSA platform, Breahnu Nega conspired with some pro-Ethiopian Oromos within the OLF ranks to split the OLF into Pro-Ethiopian and pro-Independent forces. He, Breahnu Nega and his Abysinain and some Oromo collaborators even went further by splitting the evn the pro-Ethiopian Oromo groups. The Kemal group is an example. This tactic that used by Brehanu’s group is an old tactic of divide-and-rule that Abysinains copied from the British Empire’s play book.
  3. Establish a strong diaspora media, which includes TV, different pro-Ethiopian unity websites and wage a psychological war on Oromo nationalism. For example, all pro-Ethiopian websites and ESAT TV and radio are established to attack Oromo nationalism. These attacks target not only on the essence of what is like being an Oromo and their movement but also denying all the crimes the successive Abysinians regimes committed against the Oromos. Therefore, by character assassinating Jawar Mohammed and labeling him with all evil on this world is like the saying “killing two birds with one stone” i.e target Jawar’s Oromummaa and then you targeting Oromo nationalism and its movement.

Open Response to Yilikal Getnet , chairman of the ‘Blue Party’. Stop saying “I know for you” Since We Know for Ourselves !!, Part I and II

July 23, 2013
Part  I
For Various Logical Reasons, it is better to Use Latin script instead of Geez for Afan Oromo Writing
In May 22, 2013, Life Magazine conducted an interview with Yilikal Getnet , a chairman of the ‘Blue Party’.   During the interview, Yilikal underlined that Geez is better to write Afan Oromo. Hence, I am writing this article to provide my personal opinion on Yilikal’s view or dream.
In Ethiopian Politics, saying “I know for you” remained a problems. Rulers think and said that they know for the people. The problem seems still exist in some party leaders. Recently, Yilikal Getnet, chairman of the ‘Blue Party’ said that”—I don’t see anything new. Afan Oromo is not created in EPRDF time. It was there before. But to develop the language, it would have been better to use Geez instead of Latin alphabet. EPRDF deliberately used this issue like colonizers to rule over the people.”
This statement is not justifiable and convincing when we see it from different perspectives.  First, an Engineer cannot be a linguist. An Engineer cannot do the works /activity perfumed by linguist or vice versa. The two are from two different world. Yilikal Getnet is an engineer by profession, though not clearly known whether he is a Mechanical, Civil, Electrical, Water, etc., Engineer. Being an Engineer, Yilikal advice the use of Geez Alphabet to write Afan Oromo. How he can comment on language issue? Hence, his comment have no any professional base. It appears that the Engineer did not know for himself, let alone for others. He is simply get in when he is no concerned. If his Amhara relatives heard him, they would have say “Hinde Hirgo Zinbi Zimbileh Tilk Atbel.”  His comments seem “I know For You and do as I said”  But I claim that the Oromo linguists know about their language and can logically select the script that is appropriate for Afan Oromo.
The second is that Yilikal did not provide a single reason how and why Geez is better than Latin alphabet for Afan Oromo.  He simply said “to develop the language, it would have been better to use Geez instead of Latin alphabet” He did not explained how the use of Geez help the development of Afan Oromo. Concrete reason is needed here! Yilikal failed to justify the importance and appropriateness of Geez script for Afan Oromo. On the other hand, various Oromo and other scholars provide different reason for using Latin alphabet and for not using Geez script.
Let alone the scholars, ordinary man and woman can provide justification for this. For example, Bonsa, a Blogger, replied to Yilikals idea saying ”You have no idea the linguistic incompatibility between the Sabean script and the Oromo language. It is not about having some difficulty here and there. The Sabean script utterly and completely fails to convey the language. That is why Oromos refused to use it and it is Oromos and only Oromos who know what they want and what works for them..” Details on why and how Latin script is selected for Afan Oromo writing will be presented in Part II.
Yilikal also said “EPRDF deliberately used this issue like colonizers to rule over the people.” As far as my knowledge is concerned, EPRDF did not decide the alphabet that should be used to write Afan Oromo. In November 1991, OLF called Oromo scholars and intellectuals a general meeting. Tilahun(1993:36) described the objective of the meeting as “The purpose of the meeting was to adopt the Latin script that OLF had been using or suggest an alternative. Hence, the information given by the Engineer is not based evidence. As he is an Engineer, Yilikal have no detail data on the issue he is explaining.
For these reasons, it is important to show historical development of written Afan Oromo. In addition, how, when, and why Latin Alphabet is decided to be used for writing Afan Oromo is needed to elaborated. This will be presented in Part II. Engineer Yilikal Getnet and others like is highly recommended to read the next part so that he will know why Oromos use Latin script.

Part II : Open Response to Yilikal Getnet , chairman of the ‘Blue Party’

In part I of my letter to Yilikal Getnet, I indicated how his ordinary dream to use Geez to write Afan Oromo is failed to be justifiable and convincing when we see it from different perspectives. In Part II, I briefly described the historical development of Written Afan Oromo and reasons for using Latin Script to Write Afan Oromo.  I hope it will be good lesson for Yilikal and others.
The Development of Written Afan Oromo
Afan Oromo is the second widely spoken indigenous language in Africa south of the Sahara (Mekuria,1994; Mohammed,1994). Afan Oromo is widely spoken in Ethiopia, Kenya, Somali, Sudan and Tanzania (Tilahun, 1993). Besides, Afan Oromo has long history of and well developed oral tradition. Despite of this and the size of its speakers as well as its value as widely spoken language in the Horn of Africa, it remained as unwritten language for long period of time. As Tilahun (2006:113) stated “Until recently, Afan Oromo remained an oral rather than literary language.”  This is because of different factors.
Factors that Delayed the Development of Written Afan Oromo
Different interrelated factors have been forwarded by scholars for the delayed and clumsy transition of Afan Oromo from oral to written   language.  For example, Tilahun (2006) indicated that the transition was mainly delayed by Political reason. He further stated that rather than promoting the development of the language, the past governments of Ethiopia discouraged the use of Afan Oromo even from private conversations. Under the consecutive imperial as well as the dictatorial regimes of Ethiopia, writing in other natives languages of “Ethiopia” except Amharic is strictly forbidden. Supporting this, Mohammed (1994:86) stated “— it was not permissible, to write, preach, teach and   broadcast in the Oromo language in Ethiopia until the early 1970s.”  Other linguistic groups are forced to read and write in Amharic by forgetting their own.
The Ethiopian governments had neglected and actively suppressed the development of Oromo literature and other groups whose native language is not Amharic. For this reason, Afan Oromo today lacks a developed literature and has less printed materials (Mekuria, 1994:  Mohammed,1994 ; Feyisa,1996).   In addition to the prohibition of learning and writing in Afan Oromo by law by the past Ethiopian rulers, Feyisa (1996) mentioned different factors that impede the development of written Afan Oromo such as lack of trained linguists in the language, lack of Afan Oromo training Academy and lack of suitable scripts. Further, Tilahun (2006) argued the factors could be subsumed under political factor.
Despite the political suppression on the development of Afan Oromo, the Oromos at home and Diaspora, and other interested individuals did not simply accept the suppression condition and look the situation as it is. Rather they made different attempts at home and abroad to overcome the condition and contribute their own share to development of written Afan Oromo (Feyisa, 1996). For example, Tilahun (1996:131) said” Since the early 1970s, Oromo nationalists and scholars have made tremendous effort to develop it as a literary language.”  In addition, before a decade or more, Afan Oromo has been written for various purpose using different scripts such as Arabic, Ethiopic as well as Roman scripts (Hayward and Mohammed, 1981).
Attempts to Write in Afan Oromo by the Oromo People
The history of written Afan Oromo was started in the first part 19th century. Religion especially Christian and Muslim and Oromo scholars played a pivotal role in the development of Afan Oromo literature and writing system. With this regard, Mekuria(1994:91) noted that “Oromo religious leaders and scholars have attempted to make Afan Oromo  a literate language. In1950s, an attempt was also made to develop an alphabet suitable to Oromo sounds.”  The next section illustrates attempts made to develop written Afan Oromo.
Feyisa(1996) and Tafari (1999) stated that the first attempt to write in Afan Oromo was made by Oromo themselves and the first script used was Arabic. This was come to existence through the expansion of religion, especially Musilm among the Oromos. Tafari(1999:113) stated that “After long period of Islamic education and Arabic literacy, the idea of using Arabic alphabet for Oromo language was raised.”  There are different to examples to support this.
Concerning the use of Arabic script to write Afan Oromo, Feyisa(1996) illustrated  that Wallo Oromo have used the Arabic Alphabet to write religious poetry in Afan Oromo. Feyisa further explained that since the beginning of 19th Century Afan Oromo was used as a correspondence among all the Oromo kings and it was language of education in five Jimma States and in Wallo.  In addition, the Muslim Oromos in Arsi, Bale and Hararghe areas used Arabic script to write Afan Oromo. The Arabic alphabet was used basically to write religious poems and praise poems for the Muslim saints. With this regard, Tafari(1999) mentioned that scholars such as Sheikh Ahmed Siraji, Sheikh Mohammad Asi Haba and Sheikh Mohammed Aliy Ta’oo used Arabic script and composed religious poem and different materials in Afan Oromo. Thus, it can be said that Arabic language and Islamic education made great contribution for the development of written Afan Oromo, at least in its early beginning. But the unsuitability of the alphabet to Oromo language is believed to limit the expansion of written Afan Oromo in 19th Century (Tafari,1999).
Attempts to Write in Afan Oromo by Foreign Scholars
In addition to the attempts of Oromo people, foreign scholars write Afan Oromo using different scripts. According to Feyisa(1996)  Bruce, a Scottish traveler, is the first European who collected a few words and develop sentence structure in Afan Orom using Latin script. After Bruce, various European scholars, who kept in touch with Oromo in Africa and Europe and working with them, were interested to study Afan Oromo and attempted to write Afan Oromo in Latin as well as Ethiopic scripts.
One of the attempts to write Afan Oromo was made by Ludwig Krapf.  He came to Ethiopia for missionary activity and latter, he was highly interested to study and write about Afan Oromo (Krapf,1840). On his way to Showa(around 1839), he met several Oromo’s and gathered some information on Afan Oromo, culture and religion(Mekuria,1994). Krapf recognized the importance of Afan Oromo for missionary purpose in Northeast Africa. For this reason,, he was interested to study Afan Oromo after he arrived at the court of the king of Showa. While at the court of’ the Shoan king, Krapf began to study Afan Oromo with the assistance of his servant. Hence, Krapf studied Afan Oromo in its natural surroundings. Then, he published a book in 1840.  In his book, Krapf specifically focused on the script that should be used to write the language and he described the situation that exists before the beginning of his writing as follows:
Whereas the [Oromos] are in want of letters, the choice of Alphabet for their language depends on who first begins to write it. If the writer be a native of Abyssinia, he will no doubt choose a form of letters from his own alphabet [Ethiopic or Geez]: and many Abyssinia, in fact, on seeing me occupied with the study of [Oromo] language, endeavored to persuade me to adopt the Ethiopic character (Krapf,1940:20).
From the quotation, one can understand that Afan Oromo had no one decided script of writing and selection of the scripts depends on the first who began to write it. However, if the Abyssinia (Amhara and Tigre) starts the writing, he/she will use Ethiopic script for writing Afan Oromo. Krapf also disclosed that the Abyssinia people attempted to convince to make him use of Ethiopic Alphabet after they were aware that Krapf was interested to study Afan Oromo. This shows that the suppression on Afan Oromo was started long years ago. But Krapf(1840) reported that he did not follow the advice given to him. His Justification was that” —because the Ethiopic Characters present great difficulty to writing as well as to memory” (Krapf, 1840: 21).
Further, Feyisa(1996:22)stated that”—he [Krapf] observed a number of problems with the use of Geez script to write in Oromiffa[Afan Oromo]. Through trial and error, Krapf discovered that Geez was unsuitable for writing Oromiffa. He noted that Geez alphabet does not include some of the major phonological distinctions in Oromiffa and fails to express some particular sounds in it.”  To solve the perceived limitation of Ethiopic alphabet, Krapf used the Roman script to write Afan Oromo.
In addition to the early attempts made by the Oromo themselves and the Europeans described above, various Oromo scholars attempted to developed and adapt the script of Afan Oromo suitable for writing the language. Among these, the works of two Oromos namely Sheikh Bakri Saphalo and Onesimos Nasib, are worth mentioning. These scholars contribute their own share for and played great role in the development of written Afan Oromo. Below an attempt is made to show how they attempted to developed the writing system of Afan Oromo.
The Contribution of Onesmosi Nasib  to the Development of Afan Oromo Writing
Onesimosi translated different materials to Afan Oromo. Mekuria(1994:94) mentioned the works of  Onesimos saying “Onesimos wrote and/ or translated most of them between 1885 and 1898.  During those thirteen years, he translated seven books, two of them with Aster Ganno.  He also compiled an Oromo-Swedish Dictionary of some 6,000 words.”  However, the translation of The Bible to Afan Oromo was the most significant contribution made by Onesimos. According Mekuria(1994), his translation of the Scriptures is regarded by historians and linguists as a great intellectual feat and a remarkable accomplishment for a single individual.
Further, Feyisa(1996:22) explained the contribution of Onesmos Nasib by saying” He was a real pioneer in Oromiffa literature. His translation using the Geez alphabet with an additional glottal letter for ‘dh’ is still the standard work in the field, and without doubt he was a father of Oromiffa literature.”   He wrote Afan Oromo in Ethiopic script.
The Contribution of Sheik Bakri Sapalo to the Development of Afan Oromo Writing
According to Hayward and Mohammed (1981), Sheikk Bakri was a prolific writer. Starting from his early teaching, he began to write in Afan Oromo.  In addition to this, he invented an indigenous Oromo alphabet (Feyisa,1996). The development of the indigenous alphabet is said to have taken place during 1956, at the village of Haii. Hayward and Mohammed (1981:553) described his invention as ”It does seem highly likely that Shaykh Bakri was the first Oromo who saw clearly the problems inherent in attempting to write the Oromo language by means of orthographic systems which had been devised primarily for other languages.” He was interested to develop an indigenous alphabet in that he had strong nationalistic aspiration and felt that possessing glorious historical traditions and a uniquely democratic society, lacking a means of writing as a great problem. Feyisa(1996:22) stated that” He devised scripts an indigenous and original system of writing as part of his attempt to overcome problems of orthography in writing Oromiffa. He devised scripts which were different in forms , but followed the symbol-sounds forming patterns of Geez system.”
Having developed the alphabet, the Sheik Sapalo taught it to all his students and to others as well. Then, people began to exchange letters in the new alphabet. In addition to letters, Sheik Bakri himself employed his alphabet for writing his poems and other works, and manuscripts of these are also reported to be in existence.  It is claimed that there are still people who can use it.
After the news of the development of the scrip of Afan Oromo was spread rapidly, it encountered negative reaction from the officials of the area. Nevertheless, Sheik Bakir Sapalo continued to use his own alphabet for writing. Hence, Sheik Bakir contributed his own share in the development of Afan Oromo writing by developing unique script.
The Adoption of Latin Script, Qubee, as Formal Orthography of Afan Oromo.
As described the preceding section, Afan Oromo has been written for different purposes using different scripts by various individuals.  During the previous governments, Afan Oromo was not used as a medium of instruction. However, after1970s the Oromo Liberation Front (OLF) began to use it as official language in the librated areas (Tilahun, 1993).In addition, after 1991, it was proclaimed that the native languages can be used as medium of instruction as well as can be studied as a subject of a study. Thus, there is a need to develop one formal script that can be used by all speakers of the language uniformly.
Around 1970s both Sabean and Latin were suggested to be the scripts of Afan Oromo. During this time, Mengistu partially lifted the ban on the use of Afan Oromo and allowed the use of Sebean script (Tilahun,1993). However, in November 1991, five months after the downfall of Mengistu, OLF called Oromo scholars and intellectuals a general meeting. Tilahun(1993:36) described the objective  and the participants of the meeting as “The purpose of the meeting was to adopt the Latin script that OLF had been using or suggest an alternative.  Over 1000 men and women attended the historic meeting which met in the Parliament Building in Finfinnee.”  After long hours of the discussion, it was decided that the Latin script was to be adopted. There are different reasons for the adoption of Latin script. However, the major ones are linguistic, pedagogical and practical reasons.
The first was linguistic reason. On the meeting, Sebean script was suggested as an alternative. However, it was agued that its roughly 250 characters are too clumsy to adapt to Afan Oromo. Tilahun also indicated the weakness to adopt  Sabean saying” It must also be added that the Sabean syllabary not only fails to indicate vowel length and germination, but also slows down a writer’s speed since each symbol, which cannot be written cursively, must be printed.”(1993:37). Afan Oromo, excluding those sounds represented by P,V,Z, has 34 basic sounds (10 vowels and 24 consonants). Thus, for linguistic reason, it was decided that the Latin alphabet be adapted to Afan Oromo.
The second one is pedagogical reason. According to Tilahun (1993), the 37 characters (or 34+ P,V,Z) can be learned in less than a month. In fact, only 32 symbols (minus the 5 double vowels) need to be recognized. For an Oromo learning these signs and sounds they represent, the task is even much easier It may take a non-Oromo a little longer because producing the sounds-especially those not found in his/her language-takes time.
Practical reason is the third reason for the adoption of Latin script.  Latin script was adapted to many languages of world. Thus, Qube Afan Oromo aligned itself with the so many countries of the world that use Latin script. For example, one practical advantage that is an Oromo child who has learned his own alphabet can learn the form of the English script in a relatively short period of time. Another practical reason is that its alphabetic writing’s adaptability to computer technology (Tilahun,1993). To sum up, the decision to adapt Latin Script as the writing alphabet of Afan Oromo was made by talking the above three main reasons into consideration. Subsequently, Afan Oromo was made the medium of instruction for elementary level and administration in Oromiya.(Mekuria,1994).  After the adoption, different textbooks and other useful reading materials began to be published by the new alphabet. In September 1993, school instruction was legally launched in Afan Oromo for the first time.
Hence, the use of Latin Script for Afan Oromo writing is based on scientific evidence. Not based on the dream of keeping fake Ethiopianism. Engineer Yilikal should have to know these facts before opening his mouth.

Stop Clearing Oromo from their Land in the name of boosting economic development Who will stand for the Oromo’s living on the outskirts of Finfinnee?

By Oncho G  | July 20, 2013
A. Background
It is to be recalled that Finfinnee (Addis Ababa) was founded as the present capital city the so called Ethiopian in 1886 by a man called Minilik II. During this time, the area was inhabited by the Oromo people and the area was almost covered with natural forest.  Initially the Shawa government made it seat at Ankober. Hence, before the founding of Finfinee as a political and economic capital of the king, all the areas within the present Finfinnee and the surround areas was free like any other Oromia lands. However, after 1886 the Semitic people from the northern segments and others had taken the land and the Oromo people who were used to live in these areas were forced lost their land through time.
For example, according to Central Statistics Agency of Ethiopia (2007) Out of the 2,738,248  100% total population living in Finfinnee,  the total number of the Oromo people living in the city was only 534,255 (19.51%). Since its founding as a capital, Finfinnee remained the capital city for the successive Ethiopian regimes (Menilik II, Lij Eyassu, Zawuditu, Hailesillasse I, Mengistu, Melles and HaileMariam). Through time, the number of inhabitants increased and urbanization expanded greatly. The deliberate and implicitly planned mission and decision  of the Semitic people to erase any sign of Oromo history from Finfinnee was started during the forcefully integration of Oromo people into Ethiopia as second-class citizens and the process has continued in the present government.
Different people mostly from the northern part of the so called Ethiopia have come from the various ethnic groups come and settled in the capital owing to its supper suitable agro-climatic and exploit the natural within the outside today’s Finfinne from the near distance in the name of work and investment. Where did those Oromo farmers go when Finfinnee became the property of new invaders? Be in mind that the Oromo’s are pushed to the peripheral areas of the capital and the number of Oromo people inhabitants decreased from time to time, as the above data depicts.  The indigenous people of the land were pushed out one after the other and were replaced by the invaders from the north. What is happening to the Oromo people living on the outskirt of Finfinne today? It is simply the continuation of a process, which had resulted in a massive displacement of an indigenous Oromo people.
B. The New Master Plan of Fifinnee and Areas to be Incorporated
For the last 100 or so years the Master Plan of Finfinnee city was revised several times. The recent proposal of preparing new Master Plan for City administration that planned to incorporates all the towns and districts lying within the range of 1 hour commuting distance from the Finfinnee, justifies the blatant violation of the constitution and their voracious appetite  to systematically replacing resource and land deficient people to these fertile lands owned by the Oromo people. According to the proposed plan of established the “Integrated Regional Development Plan”, an additional 36 towns and 17 districts currently administered by the Oromia regional State will be merged with Finfinnee so that the right of the land use will be determined by the central mayor .
The new Master Plan was intended to incorporate Oromia’s land locating in 100kms around the Finfinnee city. According to Ethiopia Government preparation, the following 36 Towns and 17 Districts are included in the newly planned Master plan. (See the figure 1.)
  • Some of the Towns are: Adama, Sodere, Mojo, Wenji Adama, Ejere,  Alem Tena, Koka, Adulala, Bushoftu, Dukem, Gelen, Akaki Beseka, Godino, Chefe Donsa, Sebeta , Sendafa, Milkewa, Wendoda, Sirti, Duber,Gorfo, Chancho, Mulo, Debra,Muger , Ulo, Adis Alem, Holota, Burayu,Debre Genet,  Illu Teji, Tefki, Sebeta, Boneya, Melka Kunture and etc.
  • Some of the Districts areas are: Adama, Dodota, Bora, Lome, Liben chukala, Adea (around Bushoftu), Akaki, Gimbichu, Bereh(around Sebeta),  Aleltu, Jida,  Sulultu, Ejere, Welmera, Illu, Sebeta Hawas and etc.
Today, when the world is concerned about preserving ecology and wild life in their natural habitat, it is an Ethiopian Government that is clearing an indigenous Oromo people from their home Land in the name of inequitable Economic Development.  Hence, who should stand and speak for these innocent people and argue to preserve the right of the extremely vulnerable Oromo people living in the proposed territories and to preserve the indigenous Oromo people, culture, Languages and etc. Otherwise sooner than latter these great people will be marginalized and lost their identities.

C. The Agenda behind the “Integrated Regional Development Plan (IRDP)”
An office called “Addis Ababa and the surrounding Oromia Integrated Development Plan” prepared an International and National Conference on June 2013 at Adama Town, Galma Abba Gadaa. The Objective of organizing the conference of the top ranking government cadres (mostly OPDO’s) was to work on the manifesting of the proposed  Integrated Regional Development Plan (IRDP) and prepare the cadre’s to work on the people.
On the Conference, it was stated that, the Purposes of the “IRDP” are:
  • Instrumental to unleashing Regional Development Potentials
  • Enables localities addressing their mutual development challenges
  • Enables localities addressing their mutual development challenges
  • Strengthens complementarities and interconnection of localities
These purposes can be the explicit or clear objectives of the plan. However, the plan have hidden or implicit agenda. Systematically bringing the land under their custody so that, it will sooner or later scramble among their impoverished people in their region. For example, the Finfinnee City Administration and Finfinnee Special Zone can address their mutual development challenges without being incorporated into one master plan. However, the Master plan is not prepared on mutual benefit as the plan is solely prepared by Finfinnee City Administration, despite the name of the office. Hence, though development is boldly emphasized, the main purpose seems to clear the Oromo farmers from their lands in the name of unfair Economic Development
It was also stated that the Pillars of the Integrated Regional Development Plan are:
  • Regional Infrastructure Networks
  • Natural Resource and Environment Stewardship
  • Cross – Boundary Investments/ e.g FDI)
  • Joint Regional Projects
However, there seem hidden agenda behind these pillars. For example, in the name of cross-Boundary Investments, local Oromo farmers are going to lose their land for the so-called “investors” and under the pretext of promoting national economy through FDI initiatives In addition, if the plan is going to be realized natural and environmental degradation is inevitable.
In addition, the Basic Principles of the Integrated Regional Development Plan are:
  •   Ensuring Mutual Benefits
  •   A joint development Framework – not a substitute for local plans
  •   An Integrated Regional Plan voluntarily accepted by participating partners
  •   Differences resolved through negotiation and under in-win scenario
Nevertheless, the plan will not ensure a mutual benefit at it is largely intended to displace Oromo farmers from their land. In additions, the populations of the two areas are not homogenous. Hence, they have no common interest. Even though it is said the “IRDP’ will be voluntarily accepted by participating partners, the top cadres in Oromia themselves have strongly opposed the plan on the conference. Beside, the implicit objective of the plan is to remove/avoid the differences in language and culture there by to plant “Ethiopianism or Tigreans” on Oromo land. The plan is intended to say good bye to Oromo Culture and language. The other thing is that the differences between Oromo and others cannot be resolved as it is intended to eradicate Oromo identity, culture and language. As we know from history, Oromo’s never compromised on these issues. Hence, if the plan is to be implemented, peaceful co-existence may not be there.
D.  Problems that may come because of the Integrated Regional Development Plan
As different sources shown, many Oromo’s living in Special Zone has already lost their land in the name of foreign direct investment and land grasping. This is because of several factories are constructed in the special zone by taking the Lands from local Oromo farmers. It is not new to see Oromo labor workers or guards in their own land. Family members are highly displaced by this measure. Many went to street. Not only the displaced Oromos damaged by this. It is said chemical coming out of the factories are also hurting the health of the remaining Oromos. It is said that “In Central Oromia, thousands of people and their livestock died due to the industrial pollution directly released to rivers and lakes.”
Taking the above as an experience, there also different reasons why the newly Master plan of Finfinne should not be implemented on Oromo people. Some of the reasons are:
1. It will bring Extreme Poverty: It is inevitable that the local Oromo farmers lost their land in the name of investment and urbanization. This means that the Oromos are systematically cleaned from their own land, as they were cleaned from Finfinnee in earlier days. Hence, the local farmers lose their land which is part of their permanent asset. After the lose their land, the farmers will going to work for 300 birrr in the factory or serve as house servant or home guard, which is already started.  By doing so, the farmers face extreme poverty. In addition, the gap between rich and poor will very high. For example, one writer described the impact of “investment” saying:
“The current regime has sold out more than 3 million hectares of fertile land to the foreigner investors after forcefully displacing Oromo farmers from their ancestral land. The grabbing of land ended the indigenous people without shelter and foods. This displacement of the Oromo people accompanied by limitless human rights violations set the Oromo to be the vast number of immigrants in the Horn of Africa.”

2. Family displacement and disintegration: Members of a family will be displaced and disintegrated as a result of loosing their land. In addition, the workers of Finfinnee special zone will be displaced as they are working in Afan Oromo.
3. Abuse of constitutional rights: After long year of struggle and sacrifice of thousands of Life, Afan Oromo given constitution right to be used in administration, school and other sectors in Oromia region. This is one of the basic objectives that Oromos has been struggling. However, if the master plan is going to be implemented, working language of Finfinnee City, Amharic, is going to be used in the areas. By doing so, the local people will be forced to learn new language to use it for different purpose. The measure will take back Oromo to the “Atse” region. The Federal Constitution states “Every people, nation and nationality have the right to speak, to write and to develop their own language, as well as to express, to develop and to promote their culture and history.Article 39” will be clearly violated. The Oromo living in Finfinnee Special Zone will lose the rights that the FDRE constitution guarantees them.
4. Academic and psychological impacts on Oromo students: If the newly proposed master plan of Finfinnee City is going to be implemented, Oromo students living in the surrounding area will attend their education in Amharic, which is second language to the students. It is strongly argued that using the native languages of students as a medium of instruction is a decisive factor for effective learning However, this situation, failure to give a role to native languages and largely depending on second/foreign language instruction, brought various difficulties to students. The students are expected to entangle not only with learning the subject matters but also the language itself. It also creates difficulty to students in expressing themselves and as a result it limits their classroom participation as there is fear of making mistakes. In addition, it is a barrier to smooth classroom communication. It is also argued that use of a second/foreign language in education negatively affects the ability and the ease with which knowledge is acquired by students. It also affects the performance of students and creates difficulties in developing their cognitive skills . Moreover, giving low status to native languages of students in educational setting leads to marginalization of majority of the citizens from active engagement in the development arena. In general, the master plan will have negative impacts on Oromo students in various academic aspects.
5. Impact on Identity and Culture of Local Oromo People: The new plan will make Oromos to lose their identity and culture, like the previous regimes did. This is because people having different identity and culture are going to settle on Oromo land. The settlers will push out the Oromo identity and replace by their own.  The Oromo’s will have very limited opportunity to exercise their cultural value and linguistic form. The language and cultural development will be also hampered by the new plan.
6. Economic impact: If the master plan is going to be realized, the Finfinnee City Adminstration will control all economic aspects of the areas. The income that is collected from different factories  will be taken.  The Oromiya government will loose great income to  Finfinnee city administration.
7. Impact on Natural Resource and Environment: As the result of the plan, there will be overspread ground and surface water pollution. In addition, there will be severe deforestation and natural resource depletion.
8. Cutting Oromia into East and West Regions: The new Master Plan of Finfinne city will cut the current Oromia into two parts i.e. Eastern and Western. This is because the Central and great part of Oromia is proposed to be taken and incorporated into Finfinnee. Hence, the Central part that joins East and West will be taken.
D. What Should be done to Save the Oromo People around Finfinnee
As shown above, the master plan is so disadvantage for Oromia. In general, if we see the plan, it will affect local Oromo people in various aspects.  However, the government who is supposed to represent the Oromo people is unable to see the danger. So we kindly ask the Oromos at home and Diaspora and other concerned bodies to forward ways and mechanisms to stop the intended plan. We ask the Oromo people and international communities, who will stand for the Oromo’s living around Finfinnee??
If we read an honest history of the present and past Governments of Ethiopia, we would conclude that the present Government is truly facing a difficult dilemma. At the dawn of the 21st century, we can neither run away from ourselves nor hide our realities. We have to face our generation and the historical realities of our time. It is undeniable that today, people demand respect for their human and national rights. Above all, people will not rest until their identity and their sovereignty over what is theirs is ensured. These are the peoples’ most burning issues. They realize that they have to make utmost effort of their own. It is within the context of the above-mentioned framework that the Oromo people resolutely demand their rights and freedom. It is to those who want to deny the rights and freedoms of the people that we are most bitterly opposed. It is a crime to deny the national identity and sovereignty of a people no matter how sophisticated the tactics used to do so. It is equally wrong to see the national desire of a people from a selfish perspective. It is based on the above concepts and precepts that the Oromo people continue their unceasing and bitter struggle against being treated as second class citizens. We know that our struggle is just for it is motivated by our desire to preserve our dignity and identity as a people.
We, the sons and daughters of the Oromo people, strenuously oppose the implementation of new Master Plan for Finfinne administration because we fully understand the historical development of the desire of other people to displace the Oromo people in order to benefit the non-Oromo new comers and their lackeys in this country. This highly orchestrated conspiracy, the present Oromo generation shall not tolerate at any cost. It will steadfastly and resolutely resist the conspiracy.
We also request international communities to put pressure on FDRE/TPLF Government and Finfinnee City Administration to stop the proposed Master Plan, which directly or indirectly harm the Oromo people.
We call on the Federal Government of Ethiopia, House of Peoples’ Representatives, the Federation Council, the Oromia Council  to stop clearing Oromo people from their home Land in the name of inequitable Development and replacing others on their land.
Please generate comments as many as possible on what should be done about the plan.
May Waaq Gurraacha help us!

The SECRET of Orthodox church!!!

Geda Ganamo via Facebook | July 21, 2013
Whenever we speak about Islam in Ethiopia, we can’t exclude Muslim Oromos, the Somalis, the Afars, the Argobas, the Siltie, the Harari etc. These communities see Islam as one part of their national identity values. Whenever we speak of the present aspects of Islam in Ethiopia, we are speaking about one component of the identity marks of these people. On the other …hand, these nations and nationalities were being oppressed not only for their being non-Abyssinians (the nation of ruling class) but also for their being Muslims. Accordingly, whenever they were fighting for their national rights, they were also struggling to vanquish the bad embargo put on their Islamic identity as well. What proof can I provide for this argument? I have one good example which can easily demonstrate the case.
The Ethipian Orthodox Church, which represented the official religion of the country until the fall of Emperor Haile Selassie, was serving the state as a weapon to deep-root identity crisis and inferiority complex in the minds of the subjects of the empire. And during the imperial era, the church had underlined that the two dangerous enemies of the empire were the “Galla” (a very bad word in which it used to call the Oromo people), and “Eslam” (meaning “Ethiopian Muslims”). And in one of its sacred books titled “ራዕየ ማሪያም”, the church was openly preaching a very bad thing about the two enemies it called “Galla” and “Eslam”.
“ራዕየ ማሪያም”” talks about Saint Mary’s visit of the heaven. It narrated what it claimed Mary had seen in the heavenly world on the invitation of her only Son, Jesus Christ. It said that Mary visited this and that, and Jesus Christ gave her an explanation for everything she saw. And in one scene, it said, Mary saw people who were being burned in deep valley of fire. The people there, it continued, shout in a very loud voice out of the pain and suffering. They wouldn’t die but burnt by the fire forever. So Mary asked “Who are these people? Why they are being punished in this way?” She got the following response.
“These are those who had sex with Galla and Eslam (Ethiopian Muslims)?”
The current “ራዕየ ማሪያም”” was edited during Derg and has no the aforementioned idea but if need arise we can upload the original video on YouTube. (Ubah Abdusalam)

We Are Oromos First Too!

We Are Oromos First Too!

OYSA/WWDO: We Are Oromos First Too! | July, 20, 2013
Oromummaa or Oromo nationalism has achieved successive victories and reached a higher level to mobilize the untapped Oromo human resources for a just cause – Oromo national movement that had been continuously and viciously attacked by successive Ethiopian regimes.
Even though Oromummaa has proved its maturity, firm stand, commitment and readiness to pay the necessary sacrifices back in Oromia, the recent minor retreat in the Oromo struggle has given the old empire builders in the Diaspora the courage not to accept the truth, just cause and strong Oromo nationalism. Instead they have wrongly convinced themselves that this would be a right time to rehabilitate and wage counter attack on Oromumma – which is altogether a futile attempt to begin with.
The recent multi-faceted audio-visual, oral and written media attack on Oromians and Oromummaa, although nothing of significance to deter us, is exceeding its limit and developing into physical attack on one of our members, who a few days ago produced and released a video clip declaring “I am Oromo First!” The attack happened on Tuesday July 16, 2013 in Silver Spring, Maryland in disguise. Firstly, such cowardly acts are indicators that some extremist Ethiopian immigrants, by infringing the law, have resorted to physical attack in a democratic country where they took refuge. Secondly, such unprecedented media and personal attacks on Oromumma are clear signs that Oromo nationalism has prevailed and unquestionably secured the upper hand in the political discourse in that old Empire.
